Officer Riley Flynn saved the girl and animals at around 12:58 a.m. on Sunday, May 26, the Atlantic City Police Department said in a news release. The police department also released body camera video of the rescue on Tuesday, June 4.
The video showed Officer Flynn running toward someone yelling for help outside a home on the 800 block of North Maryland Avenue.
"I tried to bust down this window," one witness said. "I can't do anything."
Officer Flynn noticed smoke coming from the home and a person hanging out of a second-story window. The witness is also heard telling the officer there was a fire inside the building.
Officer Flynn kicked in the front door and rushed up to the second floor. He led the 17-year-old girl safely out of the home, then went back inside to help first responders find the family's three dogs and a cat.
The officer and girl were treated at the scene.
"I commend Officer Flynn for his quick actions in not only rescuing a teenager, but also going back inside to rescue the animals who I know are part of their family," Chief James Sarkos said in a statement.
Atlantic City firefighters put out the fire, which started in the kitchen.
